Over 20 lakh bags of turmeric (65 kg each) was sold in 2014. On Wednesday, turmeric prices fluctuated as higher arrivals put pressure; still they ended higher. The root variety was sold at the maximum price of ₹8,241 a quintal on the last day of the year.
On Wednesday 8,500 bags arrived for sale and 60 per cent was sold. The price of hybrid turmeric jumped by ₹400 a quintal and that of the local turmeric by ₹450 from Tuesday’s prices.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,668-8,719 a quintal, the root variety at ₹4,659-7,699. Salem Hybrid: The finger variety was sold at ₹6,666-9,366, the root variety at ₹6,269-8,010. Of the 2,559 bags that arrived, 1,490 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹7,837-9,013, the root variety at ₹7,314-8,241. Of the 2,210 bags on offer, 1973 were picked up. At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹7,517-8,989, the root variety at ₹7,187-8,249. Of the 1,824 bags placed for sale, 1,769 were picked up.
