Barley futures surged by 3 per cent on Thursday with the December series topping Rs 1,460 a quintal.
Increased buying by traders, thinning arrivals, coupled with demand from the beer and feed industries, pushed up prices.
On the NCDEX, coarse grain for January and February deliveries gained 2.99 and 2.33 per cent to Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,540 respectively.
Lower barley exports from Russia and Ukraine, the top producers globally, on account of drought is likely to push up the prices of grain further. Drought in Russia this year has caused domestic wheat and barley prices to surge.
In the spot market at Jaipur (Rajasthan), barley was quoted higher at Rs 1,364.75.
