A public prosecutor for the Rs 5,574-crore National Spot Exchange Ltd scam would be appointed in a week’s time. A list of three eminent lawyers has been submitted to the State Government by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Balsingh Rajput, who also serves as second-in-command at the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), told media persons that the next step would be filing of the charge-sheet, which would have to be done by January 9. For the entire case, there would be one single charge-sheet, he said.

Rajput said that a team of EOW officers has also been sent to Ahmedabad to record the statement of Shankarlal Guru, former chairman of the exchange.

Another team of officers is in Andhra Pradesh for attaching the properties of Spincot Textiles Pvt Ltd (a borrower company). Statements of ten investors too have been recorded, which will be helpful in the prosecution. “Investors would be the prime witnesses in the case,” he said,

He pointed that the EOW is also now focussing on the role of the brokers in the scam as they are an important link in the whole investigation.

Rajput said that till date 225 properties with a book value of Rs 3,612 crore have been attached.

Shares of various companies, valued at Rs 251 crore and bank accounts with a balance of Rs 94 crore have been frozen in the case.
