Turmeric growers had something to cheer about on Tuesday as spot prices for the hybrid variety topped Rs 10,000 a quintal. Prices of other varieties improved marginally.
“Traders have reasonable demand on hand from North India but it is for quality produce. On Tuesday, 212 bags of superfine hybrid turmeric arrived for sale and traders had no hesitation in picking all of them at Rs 10,509 a quintal. The produce was immediately forwarded to Delhi and Punjab,” said R.K.V. Ravishankar, President of Erode Turmeric Merchants Association. Some traders have purchased over 3,000 bags from Nizamabad where the single polished turmeric is available at Rs 6,500 a quintal. Some traders after buying the turmeric from there are dispatching it to Bihar and Odisha, he said. Only medium variety turmeric is arriving for sale. But traders traders are sourcing such variety from Sangli and other trading centres at a lower price. They have also placed orders with growers in Assam. The poor arrivals led to prices increasing by Rs 250-300 a quintal. Traders said that they are getting upcountry orders daily and are buying limited quality stocks. On Tuesday 60 per cent of the arrivals was sold. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger variety was sold at Rs 4,559-7,959 a quintal and the root variety at Rs 4,096-6,736.
Salem hybrid crop : The finger variety was sold at Rs 6,429-10,509; the root variety at Rs 4,196-7,686. Of the 801 bags that arrived, 310 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger variety went for Rs 7,001-7,999; the root variety at Rs 5,819-7,003. Of the 255 bags that arrived, 158 found takers. At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety sold at Rs 7,011-8,069; the root variety at Rs 6,229-7,099. All the 376 bags up for sales got sold.
