The wholesale grains market displayed a weak trend during the past week as wheat and rice basmati prices fell on reduced offtake by flour mills and stockists against adequate stocks position.

However, barley and bajra rose on pick-up in demand from consuming units against less arrivals from the producing regions. The market remained closed on Thursday for Republic Day.

Traders said increased supplies against reduced offtake by flour mills and stockists mainly led to a decline in wheat dara and rice basmati prices. However, pick-up in demand from consuming industries helped barley and bajra prices to move up.

Meanwhile, rice procurement by various state-run agencies in the country crossed 20 million tonnes in the 2011-12 kharif marketing season (October-September) so far.

In the national capital, wheat dara (for mills) fell Rs 20 per quintal to Rs 1,230-1,240, while wheat deshi held steady at Rs 1,675-1,875 per quintal, respectively.

Atta chakki delivery followed suit and traded lower by the same margin to Rs 1,240-1,245 per 90 kg and maida and sooji ended flat at Rs 720-740 and Rs 740-760 per 50 kg, respectively.

In the rice section, rice basmati Pusa-1121 variety which remained steady in major part of week, met with adequate stocks position following increased arrivals from the producing regions and declined by Rs 100 to Rs 3,250-3,850 per quintal.

On the other hand, bajra and barley rose Rs 15 and Rs 30 to Rs 1,000-1,005 and Rs 1,110-1,120 per quintal, respectively, while maize lacked necessary buying support and lost Rs 50 to Rs 1,300-1,310 per quintal.
