The rupee dropped by 19 paise to 64.74 against the dollar at the interbank forex market today due to fresh foreign fund outflows.
Traders said fresh demand for the US currency from importers and a choppy domestic equity market weighed on the rupee. The dollar’s weakness against some currencies overseas, however, restricted the rupee's fall, they added.
The domestic unit opened weak by 12 paise at 64.67 against the previous close of 64.55. It hovered in a range of 64.74 and 64.65 before quoting at 64.68, down 13 paise at 4.35 pm local time.
Foreign investors had pulled out around Rs 9,690.84 crore from equity markets on Friday.
Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE index Sensex ended up by 45.63 points or 0.14 per cent at 33,731.19 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty closed down by 0.7 point or 0.01 per cent at 10,451.80.
