The rupee appreciated 23 paise to close at 67.25 against the US dollar on increased selling of the American currency by bankers and exporters.

Moreover, weakening of dollar overseas against other currencies also supported the domestic currency, dealers said.

Gain in the domestic stock market also helped the rupee strengthen against the dollar, they added.

The rupee opened at 67.39 and traded between 67.40 and 67.23 during the day's deals.

Yesterday, the rupee had ended flat at 67.48 against the US dollar on fag-end selling of the greenback by bankers and exporters in view of a weak dollar in overseas markets.
