The rupee opened weaker at 54.88 against the dollar on fresh demand for American currency from oil importers and a stronger dollar index.
The Indian unit had closed at 54.79 to the US dollar on Friday.
Investors will watch out for the consumer price inflation data on Monday for cues on the future course of monetary policy in June.
