Continuing its slide for the third straight day, the rupee fell to 67.72 against the US dollar in the evening trade on sustained demand for the American currency from importers and banks.

Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to persistent demand for the US currency, but the dollar’s weakness against euro and other currencies overseas restricted the loss.

The rupee opened weak by 10 paise at 67.58 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today. It hovered in a range of 67.62 and 67.55 before quoting at 67.55, down 7 paise at 4.25 pm local time.

The domestic unit had closed lower by 17 paise at 67.48 yesterday on persistent dollar demand from banks and importers amid weakness in equities.

Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE index Sensex ended lower by 47.13 points or 0.18 per cent at 26,765.65.
