Sensex closed flat with a gain three points on Tuesday as the investor sentiment was hit by the below normal monsoon forecast by the India Meteorological Department.
The benchmark index plunged 359 points from the day’s opening level of 25,706, but gained some of the lost ground to close at 25,584. It made a high of 25,711. The Sensex touched another new high.
Turnover on the BSE was down at Rs 4,693 crore against Rs 4,885 crore on Monday.
On the NSE, Nifty was up two points at 7,656.
IT stocks extended Monday's gains on the back of strong US job data for May 2014. Tech Mahindra hit 52-week high at Rs 2,025, but closed marginally lower at Rs 2,005.
The Government announcement to formulate a clear policy for allocation of coal and minerals helped Coal India gain two per cent to Rs 420.
Shares of two-wheeler makers dipped on worries below normal monsoon this year impacting rural demand for two-wheelers.
Major gainers for the day include TTK Prestige (13%), Gitanjali Gems (9%), Essar Oil (8%), Bharti Infratel (7%), Hindustan Copper (6%), Apollo Hospital (6%), Emami (6%), Aurobindo Pharma (5%), Suzlon Energy (5%), Dish TV India (5%) and Jet Air India (5%).
Prominent losers were Sobha Dev (-6%), Pipavav Defence (-5%), M&M Fin (5%), TV18 Broadcast (-5%), Indiabulls Real Estate (-5%) and Shree Cement (-5%).
