After the sharp fall yesterday, the Sensex closed flat with a gain of two points in volatile trade which saw the index slipping below the psychological level 20,000.
The index opened on a weak note at 20051 against the previous close of 20,209. It made a low of 19,963 and high of 20,255 before closing at 20,212.
The turnover on BSE was higher at Rs 1,801 crore against Rs 1,747 crore logged on Monday.
In NSE, Nifty was down by one point at 6,001.
Idea Cellular jumped eight per cent to Rs 151 on Tuesday after the Department of Telecommunications transferred the licenses for Punjab and Karnataka service areas held by erstwhile Spice Communications to Idea. This is subject to final outcome of Idea petition at Tdsat challenging penalties imposed by DoT in connection with acquisition of erstwhile Spice which remain stayed, Idea Cellular said in a statement on Tuesday. Spice Communications was merged with Idea Cellular effective from March 1, 2010.
The transfer of licenses would enable Idea, the commercial use of 3G spectrum won by it in 2010 auction conducted by DoT and for which it had paid Rs 322 crore to the DoT, said Idea Cellular.
Major gainers of the day include Financial Tech (5%), HDIL (5%), Pipavav Defence (5%), Power Finance (5%), Engineers India (4%), ING Vysya Bank (4%), Suzlon Energy (4%), Ashok Leyland (3%) and Bharti Airtel (3%).
Prominent losers were Mahindra & Mahindra (3%), HCL Tech (-3%), Gail India (3%), Indian Bank (-3%), Biocon (-3%) and SAIL (-3%).
