HDFC vaulted up over 5 per cent to emerge the top gainer on the BSE in late trading on Tuesday. At 3.25 pm the scrip was quoting at Rs 1,249.25 as against Rs 1,181.45 at close yesterday. This represented a gain of 5.74 per cent.
Metal shares Sesa Sterlite and Tata Steel maintained their firm undertone near the close. Sesa Sterlite held gains of 5.20 per cent at Rs 203.20 as against Rs 193.15 at close yesterday.
Tata Steel surged 4.46 per cent at Rs 401.95 as against Rs 384.80 at close on Monday.
Both the Sensex and the Nifty spiralled to record highs on the back of reports that the Chinese economy had performed better than expected. Metal shares rallied on the news. Domestic sentiment was propped up by last week's surprise rate cut and the results posted by blue-chips in the last quarter.
The Sensex surged over 500 points to breach the 28,750-mark while the Nifty was within striking distance of the 8,700-mark.
Axis Bank traded up 4.05 per cent to quote at Rs 550.05. The share had closed the overnight session at Rs 528.65.
Tata Motors drove up 3.94 per cent at Rs 560 as against Rs 538.75 at close yesterday.
