Shares of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) on Wednesday surged nine per cent after Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said he will directly monitor the performance of public sector telcos. The scrip ended 8.96 per cent up at Rs 34.65 on the BSE. During the day, it gained 9.9 per cent to Rs 34.95.
At the NSE, the public sector telecom firm’s stock rallied 8.01 per cent to Rs 34.40. On the volume front, 79.61 lakh shares of the company changed hands at the BSE, while over 2 crore shares were traded at the NSE during the day.
While talking about the performance of public sector telcos - BSNL and MTNL - Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had yesterday said he will directly monitor the performance of their network.
“I have decided that an NOC (network operating centre) will be set up in my chamber in which number of BSNL-MTNL towers working or not working will appear on a screen before me,” he had said.
