Powered by SBI and Axis Bank, the BSE bank index virtually roared to be the largest index gainer on the exchange this morning.
The positive performance of the bank index could be judged from the fact that all the 14 stocks constituting the index trading in the green.
SBI was up by Rs 50.30 to trade at Rs 1,688.05, a gain of 3.07 per cent. Axis Bank made the biggest gain in terms of percentage of 4.18 per cent or Rs 35.75 to trade at Rs 891.50. ICICI Bank was up by Rs 22.25 at Rs 768 and PNB moved to Rs 846.35, a gain of Rs 21.70.
BoB (up by Rs 17.55 at Rs 713) and Canara Bank (up by Rs 16.90 at Rs 411.30) were the other significant gainers. But HDFC Bank, which moved up to Rs 459.20, a gain of Rs 4.30, Union Bank (up by Rs 6.85 at Rs 176.80) and IDBI Bank (up by Rs 2 at Rs 86.55) put up a modest show.
The bankex was up by 214 points, edging out capital goods index, which was up by 211 points, to the second spot.
