The BSE Sensex ended the session flat on Tuesday at 17,243, up 0.1 per cent from its previous close. The NSE Nifty closed the day at 5,243, up 0.2 per cent.

“Volatility was high as Nifty see-sawed between positive and negative territory for the entire day. Nifty managed to remain in the green for better part of the morning session. However, afternoon session witnessed Nifty slipping down into the red as the sentiments got hurt on negative opening of European markets. Short-covering enabled Nifty to not only pare its losses but also inch upwards into positive territory in the last hour of trading session,” said Ms Shanu Goel, Senior Research Analyst, Bonanza Portfolio.

The day's high for the Sensex was 17,274, while the day’s low was at 17,135. The Nifty saw a day’s low of 5,211 and a day’s high of 5,254.

On the BSE, the FMCG stocks were up two per cent on the back of reports that monsoon will arrive on time this year. Nestle India was up 4.5 per cent.

Of the Sensex 30 stocks, Tata Power, Tata Motors, HUL, SBI and ITC were the top five gainers for the day. BHEL, GAIL, Infosys, Sterlite Industries and ONGC were the top laggards.

Most European indices were down during Tuesday’s trading session. Asian stocks, which were up in the early hours of trade, closed in the red. The Hong Kong indices were down more than one per cent. The Japanese indices had a mixed day in spite of the gain by exporters due to a weaker yen.
