The week began on a flat note for the stock markets on Monday. While the BSE benchmark Sensex closed in the green, the NSE Nifty ended the day in the red.
The Nifty was down 0.05 per cent to close at 5,046.25, down 2.35 points. However, the Sensex was up 0.08 per cent or 12.72 points, and closed at 16,751.73.
FMCG, tech and realty stocks were the gainers on Monday while oil and gas, energy and metal stocks took a beating.
Kotak Bank, Sterlite, L&T and Maruti were among the corporates that announced their third quarter results on Monday. The RBI is set to announce its credit policy on Tuesday.
According to market analysts, the Sensex was rangebound and closed the session on a flat note owing to weak global cues. Moreover, mixed set of numbers too kept the Nifty moving around the 5,050 level during the day, they added.
Volatility was up, with the India Vix closing up 0.81 per cent, at 22.14.
Maruti, BHEL, DLF, Bharti Airtel and ITC were the top five Nifty gainers while Sterlite, Hindalco, Hero MotoCorp, Kotak Bank and Coal India were the losers.
