Benchmark indices were trading lower amid volatility during the afternoon on Friday.

The market opened on a positive note amid positive global cues. Market oscillated between gains and losses in the first half. Indices were trading lower during the afternoon, dragged by pharma, and losses in heavyweights such as Reliance.

At 1 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading at 58,130.93, down 330.36 points or 0.57 per cent. It recorded an intraday high of 58,757.09 and a low of 58,075.24. The Nifty 50 was trading at 17,318.75, down 82.90 points or 0.48 per cent, near the day’s low of 17,302.60. It recorded an intraday high of 17,489.80.

UPL, BPCL, Ultratech Cement, Tata Steel and IOC were the top gainers on the Nifty 50, while Powergrid, Sun Pharma, Reliance, Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel were the top laggards.

Metal, realty in focus

On the sectoral front, while pharma, financial services, and FMCG dragged, metals, realty and consumer durables managed to retain gains.

Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare Index were down 0.70 and 0.88 per cent, respectively. Nifty Financial Services and Nifty FMCG were down 0.53 per cent each.

Meanwhile, Nifty Metal was up 0.48 per cent while Nifty Realty was up 0.57 per cent. Nifty Consumer Durables was up 0.42 per cent.

Broader indices

Broader indices were in the green, outperforming the benchmarks.

Nifty Midcap 50 was up 0.35 per cent while Nifty Smallcap 50 was up 1.49 per cent. The S&P BSE Midcap was up 0.38 per cent, while the S&P BSE Smallcap was up 0.68 per cent.

The volatility index softened 1.07 per cent to 17.89.
