Bankers in Dakshina Kannada are likely to cover all the families in the district with bank accounts under the Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in a week.
This was revealed at a meeting to review the progress of the Central government projects in Mangalore on Thursday. Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada Nalin Kumar Kateel presided over the meeting.
A representative of the lead bank of the district informed the meeting that around 500 families in the district are yet to open bank accounts under the PMJDY. Bankers in the district opened 1.64 lakh accounts after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced it recently.
As per the 2011 Census, Dakshina Kannada has 4.40 lakh households. PMJDY focuses on opening bank accounts for each household, both in urban and rural areas, in the country.
Kateel said that managers in some branches of various banks in the district are not clear about the procedures to be followed in PMJDY. He asked the bankers to look into that issue. He said he would invite Central ministers to declare 100 per cent implementation of PMJDY in Dakshina Kannada district.
Reviewing the progress of other projects in the district, he took the agency concerned to task for the delay in the completion of the approach road to Mangalore International Airport.
KRDCL (Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd), which has been assigned the work to implement the project, was asked to complete the work on the road by March.
