The All India Bank Employees’ Association has hailed the appointment of Laxmi Srinivas as Workman Employee Director on the board of State Bank of Hyderabad.

The appointment of Srinivas has assumed significance because she is, according to the AIBEA General Secretary C.H. Venkatachalam, the first woman employee to be appointed as Employee Director in a bank.

Ever since the banks were nationalised in 1969, the AIBEA has been fighting for workman representation on the boards of the banks.

Today, there are over 1.5 lakh women working as employees and officers in the banking sector, particularly in public sector banks. Quite a few have even risen to top positions as Executive Director and Chairman-cum-Managing Director, he added.

While hailing the women’s role in banks and Laxmi Srinivas appointment in particular, the AIBEA General Secretary did not fail to point out that the association has endeavored to encourage the participation of women in union activities and assigning leadership roles to women.
