Higher provisioning in the last quarter limited the increase in net non-performing assets for the listed banks.

As on March 31, 2013, net NPA of 39 listed banks increased by a meagre 0.8 per cent to Rs 92,825 crore from Rs 92,075 crore as on December 31, 2012, according to NPAsource.com, an online portal that focuses on resolution of stressed assets.

However, for the full year ended March 31, 2013, net NPAs jumped 51 per cent at Rs 92,825 crore (against Rs 61,381 crore as on FY12), while gross NPAs of the banks rose by 36 per cent.

Of the 39 banks that have declared results, eight banks have reported more than Rs 100 crore reduction in net NPAs during the fourth quarter, accounting for a drop of around Rs 5,645 crore.

State Bank of India reported the biggest drop of around Rs 3,400 crore during the fourth quarter.

D.K. Jain, CMD, Atishya Group, owner of portal NPAsource.com said, “We believe that with the interest rates expected to come down, the next few quarters may see a slowdown in the growth rate of NPAs. But, pressure on NPAs, especially for public sector banks will continue as more loans become NPAs due to the overall slowdown in the Indian and global economy. The first two quarters of the current fiscal are going to see a higher growth in NPAs as provisioning will be low.”
