The RBI has said that during 2011-12, 3,343 million pieces of two rupee coins were minted by the Government of India against 1,480 million pieces of one rupee coins and 761 million pieces of five rupee coins.
The RBI was responding to a request for information under the RTI Act by RTI activist Subhash Chandra Agrawal.
Agarwal has drawn attention to the shortage of one rupee and five rupee coins when compared to two rupee coins.
The RBI has replied that the production of these coins was also increasing and their availability would improve.
It has, however, declined to say anything on the design of the one rupee coin which the activist has found to be very similar to the 10 paise coin. Instead it has directed him to take up the matter with the Government of India since the design is done by them.
