Employees from all six branches of IDBI in Vizag launched four-day strike here on Monday along with their colleagues in different parts of the country in protest against the move to privatise the bank.
The employees gathered at the IDBI branch on VIP Road and raised slogans against offloading majority stake. PCC general secretary Dronamraju Srinivas, CITU State general secretary M.A. Gafoor and district president Jaggu Naidu took part in the demonstration.
The staff sought an assurance in writing from Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on not privatising the bank and not allowing the government’s stake in IDBI to come down below 51 per cent.
Gafoor said IDBI was one of the leading profit-making bank and all the trade unions affiliated to CITU would oppose privatisation of IDBI.
IDBI staff forum State unit treasurer Chandramouli said IDBI was making profits continuously and paying dividends consistently to the government and the stake-holders every year.
Presently, the bank is having a business of over Rs.4.43 lakh crore and is regarded as the top five public sector banks in the country.
