The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY) added 69 lakh new accounts during the post-demonetisation period between November 9 and December 28.
Interestingly, a majority of new PMJDY accounts came from urban areas than rural areas. Urban and rural areas added 40.41 lakh and 28.61 lakh new accounts, respectively, during the period.
The total number of PMJDY accounts increased to 26.20 up to December 28 from 25.51 crore posted till November 9.
Uttar Pradesh alone contributed nearly one-third of the 69 lakh new accounts. It added 22.86 lakh new PMJDY accounts. Madhya Pradesh followed it with 10.42 lakh new accounts, Maharashtra with 8.81 lakh, West Bengal with 6.26 lakh, Gujarat 5.19 lakh and Bihar with 4.25 lakh new accounts. The number of accounts came down by around 92,000 in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the percentage of zero-balance PMJDY accounts went up to 24.12 per cent by December 28 from 23.27 per cent opened till November 9. It had reached a low of 22.84 per cent as on November 30. The number of zero-balance accounts increased to 6.32 crore as on December 28 as against 5.93 crore as on November 9.
Jammu and Kashmir has seen a significant reduction in zero-balance accounts. The State, which had 7.24 lakh (36.67 per cent) zero balance accounts as on November 9, brought it down to 5.62 lakh (29.86 per cent) as on December 28.
Spurt in depositsThese PMJDY accounts were richer by ₹25,399.97 crore till December 28. The deposits in these accounts went up to ₹71,036.59 crore as on December 28, from ₹45,636.62 crore as on November 9. The deposits reached a peak of ₹74,609.48 crore as on December 7.
The amount in these accounts doubled in States such as Gujarat (₹3,562.73 crore as on December 28 from ₹1,686.33 crore till November 9), Karnataka (₹3,096.03 crore as on November 23 from ₹1,456.96 crore as on November 9). The deposits stood at ₹224.03 crore as on December 28) after demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes.
