The new RBI Governor designate Raghuram Rajan has expressed optimism about overcoming the challenging environment in the economy.
“The economic environment is challenging today …and we will overcome it,” Rajan told mediapersons on the sidelines of RBI’s central board meeting, which was attended by incumbent Governor D. Subbarao and four Deputy Governors, among others.
Rajan spoke to the media in Mumbai for the first time after his appointment, saying that he is looking forward to working with everybody at the RBI. For the next three weeks Rajan is on special duty at the central bank in the run-up to his taking over on September 5.
Within a year of working as the Chief Economic Advisor with the Ministry of Finance, 49-year-old Rajan is set to become the RBI’s 23rd and its youngest Governor, taking over from Subbarao who retires on September 4.
