Amidst nation-wide farmer protests, the government passed three farm related bills in the Lok Sabha during the current monsoon session.
Two of these bills -- the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill – were piloted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
The third, the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill was introduced by the Consumer Affairs Ministry. The Lower House already passed these bills despite stiff opposition from several political parties, including one of the allies of the ruling alliance.
On Sunday(September 20), these bills are expected to come up in the Rajya Sabha for voting.
Let’s find out from TV Jayan, Senior Deputy Editor with Hindu Business Line , about these bills and the concerns around them.
