A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit off the coast of North Andaman island today but the Meteorological Department said there was no threat of a tsunami.
The earthquake struck at 12.37 p.m. at a depth of 35 km off the coast of North Andaman island, Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), L S Rathore, said, adding it was of moderate intensity.
He said there was no threat of tsunami.
The Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea is prone to earthquakes and often records tremors.
