TIFR has got ₹896.09-crore Central grant to set up a 200-acre campus at Gachibowli, said a press release.
The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, under the Department of Atomic Energy, had submitted a detailed project proposal to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), which had approved in February 2019.
The Telangana government had allocated the land and the former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone in 2010. In anticipation of developing the campus and pending the fund approval, the TIFR had initiated research activities in interdisciplinary sciences in a rented premises.
The new campus will be developed during 2019-2024.
Currently, there are 25 faculty members, 95 research scholars, and 33 post-doctoral fellows. It is projected that, in future, this strength will reach 250 faculty members, 1,500 research scholars and 500 post-doctoral fellows, a press release said.
