The Supreme Court today appointed a one-member commission headed by its ex-judge S B Sinha to inquire into 2006 Meerut fire tragedy, in which around 60 persons died.
It has asked the Uttar Pradesh Government to pay an interim compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of the deceased, and Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured.
The apex court has asked the commission to submit its report by January 31, 2015.
