Higher education institutions can play a vital role in preparing human development and comprehensive development plan reports for the districts, according to Muddumohan, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi district.

He said this while inaugurating a workshop organised for finalising the ‘Human Development Report for Udupi district for 2012’ at Nitte on Saturday. The workshop was organised at the Nitte-based Justice KS Hegde Institute of Management, with the support of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat.

He said that the involvement of the institute has helped the Government a lot at the district-level in fulfilling the objectives of preparing an authentic and reliable human development report.

Human development

Muddumohan said that the academic and policy significance of the concept of human development has taken a new turn now.

Human development is, no doubt, the goal of any society which faces the problems of poverty, unemployment, and malnutrition. Obviously in such a society, education and healthcare facilities are needed. But human development cannot just remain a goal of planning. Eventually it emerges as a means of overall development in every society, he said.

M Kanagavalli, Chief Executive Officer of Udupi Zilla Panchayat, NK Thingalaya, Chairman of the Academic Council of the institute, and NS Shetty, lead coordinator of Human Development Report 2012, were present on the occasion.
