The United Progressive Alliance’s ‘game-changer’ National Food Security Bill could not be taken up in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday due to repeated disruptions on issues, such as Telangana and Gorkhaland. As the House began, there was much anticipation of a speech by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who was slated to lead the debate on the Bill. The party had even issued a whip to its members to be present in the Lok Sabha during the discussion.
However, after two adjournments, when Food Minister K.V. Thomas stood up to make a statement on the Bill, slogan shouting by Telugu Desam Party members created a din. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party members stood up demanding that the House be brought to order, saying they could not hear the Minister. The House was again adjourned till 3 p.m., after which, Speaker Meira Kumar read out a resolution against attack on an Indian patrol on the Line of Control. She later adjourned the House till Monday.
