Members of Bar Council of India (BCI) today met Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal and pressed for direct involvement of bar associations in the National Judicial Appointment Commission for judges.
A statement by BCI said different lawyers’ bodies stuck to their demand that chairman or the representative of BCI, concerned bar associations and state bar councils should form part of the commission.
“Members of the Council were of the view of that without the involvement of the BCI and other Bar Councils, the process of appointment of judges cannot be changed.
“The lawyers of the country are not going to tolerate replacement of existing collegiums with the proposed Commission, without the representation of the Bar Councils and the Associations,” BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said.
