A national stakeholders’ workshop on ‘Energy saving in fishing vessels’ discussed various aspects of energy saving in fishing.

Organised by the fishing technology division at Central Institute of Fisheries Technology here, the speakers stressed on the need for energy saving in the fisheries sector especially in the context of increasing fuel prices and increase in number and size of fishing craft and gear.

The workshop featured invited talk on energy utilisation in fishing vessels, energy loss in fishing operations: fishermen perspective, alternate energy sources in fishing, introduction of solar energy in fisheries – an option for energy conservation, energy loss in boat building and experiences in energy saving in beach landing craft by the experts in related fields.

Areas of energy losses in boat building operation of craft and gear and lack of maintenance and non-diligent use by the operators were discussed. Use of alternate energy for propulsion and power to the auxiliary machinery were also explained by the speakers.

Naval architects, fishermen, boat builders, fishing vessel operators, users of alternate energy powered fishing craft, energy monitoring agencies, scientists, researchers and stakeholders working in the fisheries sector participated in the workshop.

K. Gopakumar, former DDG (Fisheries), ICAR, made introductory remarks. The function was presided over by T.K. Srinivasa Gopal, Director, CIFT.
