The West Bengal finance minister, Amit Mitra, will meet Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram later this week to discuss the State Government’s demand for a special financial package. The meeting is expected to take place around September 6 or September 7, sources in Writers’ Buildings said.
“There have been lot of discussions on the issue with the former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Around 10 such meetings have taken place and these include ones that were attended either by the Chief Minister or me,” Mitra told reporters at the State Secretariat on Monday.
The meeting assumes importance following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remarks that the Centre was trying to address West Bengal’s demand for financial assistance.
