A six-member Pakistani delegation of Indus Water Commission today left for India and is expected to raise concerns regarding designs of four dams being built on river Chenab.
Mirza Asif Baig, who is heading the team, said that the design issues of the four projects, including those related to spillway, intake and pondage, will be discussed.
The four projects being built by India on the Chenab are aimed at generating over 2,000 MW of energy and include the 850-MW Ratle and Miyar dams.
The ruling PML-N was the only political party to bring up the issue of “water management” in the context of relations with neighbouring countries in its manifesto.
In recent years, differences over sharing river waters have emerged as a key irritant between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan has opposed several water projects being built by India in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming that they violate the Indus Waters Treaty.
