The YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP) dream to form the first government in the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh appears to be shattering.
The party, led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy, son of late former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, has failed to make a mark in the polls as it is leading in only 61 constituencies out of 175 in the state.
Its main opponent, Telugu Desam Party, is close to win the simple majority with lead in 10 seats even as its ally, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is leading in four seats.
The outcome of elections in Andhra Pradesh has assumed importance as it seen as a contest between the issues of corruption and need for development. The available trends are an indication that corruption is a major issue in shaping the mandate.
It is emerging as a second player In the run-up to Lok Sabha too. Out of 25 seats, it is leading only in nine against 15 of TDP.
