India Met Department (IMD) has upgraded the weather alert in the Bay of Bengal to that of a tropical cyclone, after yesterday's low-pressure area rapidly intensified through today.

The morning's depression over intensified into a deep depression over the West-Central Bay, about 310 km east­-south-east of Kalingapatnam and 300 km east-­south-east of Gopalpur.

It is expected to further intensify into a cyclonic storm, move west-­north-west and cross the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts between Kalingapatnam and Paradip close to Gopalpur (Odisha) around mid­night.

HIGH WINDS

Buffeted by winds speeding to 60- to ­70 km/hr and gusting to 80 km/hr, it is likely to continue to move west­-north-west and weaken back into a deep depression into tomorrow morning.

It would intensify again to become a deep depression and cross Odisha­-North Andhra Pradesh coasts between Kalingapatnam and Paradip close to Gopalpur (Odisha) tonight/early tomorrow morning.

Winds are currently clicking 50 to 60 km/hr. They will escalate to a peak of 60 to 70 km/hr gusting to 80 km/hr by midnight tonight, but wind down to 50 to 60 km/hr with gusts of 70 km/hr by tomorrow morning, in line with the weakening of the system.

Sea conditions would turn adverse over the South Bay and the Andaman Sea during the next two days. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these seas during this period.

After crossing, the deep depression will stick to the west-north-west track over Central India, pumping rains into Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand and the plains of Bengal during next two days, and, later over adjoining peninsular India and North-West India. 

Rain or thundershowers have already been reported from Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands; Assam, Meghalaya, East Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Interior Karnataka.

VERY HEAVY RAINS

An extended forecast valid until September 27 said that widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over North-West India while it would be scattered to fairly widespread over North-East India, the northern  plains and South Peninsular India.

Meanwhile, an IMD outlook valid for the rest of today said that heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls are likely over Odisha, as the depression attains more strength in the Bay.

It would be heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls for adjoining North Coastal Andhra Pradesh as well;  heavy to very heavy over Chhattisgarh and Telangana; and heavy rain over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rayalaseema and Karnataka.

Given the monsoon transition time, thunderstorms accompanied with lightning have been warned of over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Interior Karnataka.

'Rough' to 'very rough' sea conditions with wave heights reaching up to 20 ft have been warned of over South, Central and North Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and along and off the Andhra Pradesh, ­West Bengal­, and Odisha coasts.  Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
