West Bengal has registered a revenue surplus in State GST collections for March 2018.
In a congratulatory note, the Union Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has pointed out that despite the country registering a SGST revenue deficit of 17.9 per cent for the period, West Bengal has been one of the exceptions.
According to the note, revenue deficit across the country has come down from over 28 per cent in July 2017 to 17.9 per cent in March.
In the case of West Bengal, there was a 33.4 per cent revenue deficit in August 2017, which has now changed to a surplus.
“You will be happy to know that the Government of India has congratulated West Bengal for not only bringing down rapidly the revenue gap in State GST, but also registering a revenue surplus in March, 2018,” the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on her Facebook page.
Incidentally, Banerjee had gone on from being one of the most vocal supporters of GST, to its vehement critic. The CM maintains that she is against the hurried rollout of the new tax regime.
