A massive blast and a fire at 2.55 pm have been reported at the main refinery complex of BPCL, Mumbai. Fire and smoke was seen emanating at BPCL's refinery near the Eastern Freeway in Chembur, Mumbai.
The fire department reported a level 3 fire call. Mumbai Fire Chief in a WhatsApp message to BusinessLine said that seven fire engines, two foam tenders and two jumbo tankers have been rushed to the refinery complex.
The blast was so massive that the shock waves shook the glass panes windows of residential buildings four km away. Residents around the area said that it felt like an earthquake.
A statement issued by Bharat Petroleum said , "A fire occurred at BPCL Mumbai Refinery at Mahul plant today at around 1445hrs. The fire was in the Compressor shed of Hydrocracker plant. The fire is being fought by The Refinery fire fighting team. The fire is still on but is under control. There has been minor injury sustained by 2 people. They were attended at our Refinery Medical Centre and are being taken to hospital for further treatment. Further update will be given at 5.00 pm."
