Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) grouping has resolved to promote green energy and maximise energy efficiency by cooperating with one another.

The resolution was made here on Tuesday at the conclusion of a two-day international conference of the BRICS working group on energy efficiency. Delegates from all member countries participated in the meet.

BP Pandey, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Power, said notes were exchanged on the experiences of the member countries in promoting energy efficiency in the fields of agriculture, industry and in civic bodies by promoting LED lighting.

He said the energy saving initiatives taken up by the AP government, such as LED lighting and energy-efficient agri pumpsets, were also mentioned at the meet.

In response to a question, he said solar power had now become affordable to the common man as the unit rate could be brought down to roughly ₹5 a unit. Use of solar power is expected to increase substantially in the country. “In fact, by 2030, our target is to have 40 per cent of the installed power capacity in the country to come from green, renewable sources,” he added.

Paula Rassi (Brazil), Olga Yudina (Russia), Shancheng Wang (China) and Xolile Mabusela (South Africa) narrated the experiences in their countries.
