Bhandara-Gondiya and Palghar in Maharashtra, Kairana in Uttar Pradesh and Nagaland Parliamentary constituency in Nagaland will witness by-elections on May 28 to elect their Lok Sabha representatives, the Election Commission announced on Thursday.
The Commission also announced that polling for 10 Assembly constituencies in nine States will also be held on May 28.
Counting of votes for all the seats will be on May 31.
The Assembly constituencies going to polls include Tharali in Uttrakhand, Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh, Jokihat in Bihar, Gomia and Silli in Jharkhand, Chengannur in Kerala and Maheshtala in West Bengal.
The resignation of sitting BJP MP Nana Patole late last year, and his decision to join the Congress, has necessitated the by-election in Bhandara-Gondia, while the deaths of Chintaman Wanaga, the BJP MP from Palghar, and Hukum Singh, the MP from Kairana, have necessitated the by-polls in those seats. Similarly, the by-elections to the Noorpur Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh has been necessitated by the recent death of Lokendra Singh Chaunhan.
The Gomia seat in Jharkhand fell vacant earlier this year after the sitting MLA Yogendra Mahto was disqualified after being sentenced to two years in jail in a coal theft case by a lower court in Ramgarh.
The Commission announced that May 10 will be the last date for filing of nomination for all the seats.
