The BJP looked completely isolated on Monday after the Centre’s decision to impose President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh drew flak from various State governments and political parties.
The Congress, in an effort to make the issue a larger question of “cooperative federalism”, said “RSS-affiliated Governors” are creating obstacles for elected governments around the country. The Centre wants to destabilise all non-BJP led governments through the offices of Governors, it added.
The Left parties, JD(U), AAP and several regional parties questioned the Union Cabinet’s decision to impose President’s rule in the border State. In the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, the Congress has 47 members.
The Speaker had disqualified 14 Congress MLAs. The BJP has 11 MLAs and the other two members are Independents.
Submit petitionCongress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, Kapil Sibal and V Narayanasamy, and State Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and State Congress chief Padi Richo met President Pranab Mukherjee and submitted a memorandum questioning the Centre’s decision.
They said the decision to recommend President’s rule was disturbing as the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench is considering a case against the State Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa. Azad told reporters that the Congress will raise the matter in Parliament during the upcoming Budget session.
Sibal said the decision reflects the intolerant mindset of the Modi government.
“Cooperative federalism has been thrown into the dustbin and ‘coercive federalism’ is the order of the day. The Union government’s agenda is to destabilise all non-BJP led governments through the office of the Governor. Arunachal Pradesh is just one such example,” he told reporters.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the Centre’s decision is against the Constitution.
Sensitive regionThe CPI said the BJP should be held responsible for the state of affairs in Arunachal Pradesh, a very sensitive and strategic border State. “It flouted all Parliamentary democracy norms to topple the State government and create conditions for its entry,” CPI leader D Raja said.
PTI reports: The Congress, meanwhile, moved the Supreme Court challenging the Union Cabinet’s recommendation.
“We have filed the petition before the apex court registry,” said Congress leader and senior advocate Vivek Tankha.
