As a permanent remedy to mitigate the impact of floods in Chennai and its suburban regions, a comprehensive flood management plan for North and South Chennai has been prepared at an estimate of ₹2,055.67 crore and ₹1,243.15 crore respectively. This has been submitted to the Centre for support, said Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam while presenting the State Budget for 2018-19.

Chennai was battered by heavy rains in 2015, and again in 2017, throwing the city out of gear. One of the reasons was poor flood management.

Panneerselvam said the State government will re-launch Chennai Mega City Development Mission for which ₹500 crore is being allocated in this Budget.
