In a setback for Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Income Tax Department to reopen a case against him pertaining to his income for the assessment year 2001-02. A Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and PC Pant upheld two orders of the Mumbai IT Commissioner, directing fresh assessment of the tax liability of the star.
The apex court allowed two separate appeals filed by the I-T Department and set aside the orders of the Bombay High Court in 2008 and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).
The order was passed on two appeals by the IT Department, which claimed the actor owes crores of rupees in taxes on income earned from the TV show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.
