As many as 43,846 people tested positive for Covid-19 – 83 per cent of them from just six States – during the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases in the country to over 3.09 lakh, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.
During the same period, more than 25.40 lakh vaccinations carried out across the country, helping the cumulative inoculations to cross 4.46 crore till date.
Maharashtra accounted for a major share of cases with 27,126, followed by Punjab (2,578) and Kerala (2,078). Karnataka (1,798), Gujarat (1,565), Madhya Pradesh (1,308) and Tamil Nadu (1,243) other States with high number of cases. Haryana (872) and Delhi (813) are two other States with increasing number of cases.
Since Saturday morning, 197 deaths were reported from different States, 92 of them from Maharashtra, pushing up the Covid-19 death toll in the country since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,59,755. Punjab is another States that reported high mortality with 38 deaths on Saturday.
Among the districts that have reported highest number of active cases are Pune (38,803), Nagpur (28,423), Mumbai (20,019), Thane (18,088) and Nashik (13,223) – all from Maharashtra.
