The Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday demanded the arrest of Union HRD Minister, Smriti Irani, for "driving'’ the University of Hyderabad (UoH) Ph.D scholar, Vemula Rohit, to suicide.
While addressing the students at the UoH campus here today, the Delhi Chief Minister said Irani’s name should be included in the FIR already filed by the police on the university Vice-Chancellor, the Union Minister of State, B Dattatreya, and two others.
Taking exception to disciplinary action taken by the university on five students of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA), including Rohit, he attributed the expulsion of students to Dattatreya who had put "pressure'' on the Vice-Chancellor with his letters.
On the allegation that the expelled students had involved in "anti-national'' activities, Kejriwal said speaking about Ambedkar and fighting for Dalits were also nationalism.
Lok Satta Party President Jaya Prakash Narayan, who also visited the campus, expressed his solidarity with the students by participating in the relay hunger strike.
Rohit, who was expelled from hostel as part of disciplinary measures along with four other students of ASA a couple of weeks ago, had allegedly committed suicide in the campus hostel on Sunday.
