West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Friday expressed concern over rising incidents of dengue and other vector borne diseases and deaths in the State.

A statement from the Raj Bhavan said the Governor was “concerned about the health of the people” and has “written to the State government”.

“Governor Tripathi has written a letter to the State government to the effect that, in view of the serious nature of all these diseases and the concern expressed by a large number of the population in this regard, all efforts should be made for treatment as well as prevention of these diseases,” it said.

Bone of contention

Dengue deaths have become a bone of contention between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Opposition.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed that there is no cause for panic, training her guns on private hospitals and diagnostic laboratories for “spreading misinformation”.

Suppressing information

The Opposition parties have, however, alleged that the State government is deliberately hushing up the matter and suppressing information relating to dengue and related deaths.

On Friday, both the Congress and Left Front took out separate rallies in the city protesting the government’s handling of the dengue outbreak. Previously, the BJP too had taken out rallies across the city, demanding better handling of the situation.
