The Information & Broadcasting Ministry (I&B) on Wednesday issued an advisory stating that private TV channels should ensure that they do not violate the conditions of the uplinking policy guidelines while stressing that non-news TV channels are not allowed to carry news or current affairs-based programmes.
This advisory on not to breach the uplinking policy guidelines, comes a day before the Election Commission’s announcement of the 2019 Lok Sabha poll results.
The Ministry said permission of uplinking of TV channels is given under two categories — non-news & current affairs channels and news & current affairs channels — in accordance with Policy Guidelines for Uplinking of Television Channels from India, 2011. “At the time of applying for a non-news TV channel, the applicant company gives an undertaking that the proposed channel is purely an entertainment platform and does not have any news or current affairs-based programme,” the I&B Ministry said in its advisory.
Emphasising on the definition of the two categories, the advisory said, “while a non-news & current affairs TV channel does not have any element of news and current affairs in its programming content, the news and current affairs channels have it.
“It is hereby advised that all TV channels may strictly ensure that there is no violation of the conditions of the (uplinking) guidelines,” the Ministry stated.
