How many of us want to get employed or give employment to others asked K.M. Padmanabhan, Director of Prerana Educational Media Pvt Ltd to students of management studies of JB Institute of PG Courses (MBA), Tirupati while delivering a BL Club guest lecture presented by Central Bank of India.

He said that if students were interested in getting into employment, generally the first question asked in any interview is ‘Tell me something about yourself…and that is the topic of the guest lecture, he said.

Research worldwide says that 90 per cent of the people fail in interviews not because they do not know the answer but they don’t prepare their answers and articulate meaningfully.

During interviews, if one says he/she likes something which is a hobby, then they should be in a position to explain it in detail and failing in this means that they do not know how to communicate. However talented or qualified one is, if they cannot meet the needs of the employer, they will not get a job.

He asked students to do research on people who offer them jobs and find their needs and make a self-assessment on whether they possess those required skills. Those who get employed are the ones who match their skills with that of the expectations of the employer, he added.

Tell me about yourself has three components — knowledge, skill and attitude. He said knowledge is nothing but the accumulation of learning till date through formal education and experience. Attitude is the motivation to do and skill is the ability to apply the knowledge hands on. MBA programme is about skills and not about knowledge, he added.
