There should be more awareness amongthe public on the role of chartered accountants to attract more students into the profession, according to PR Aruloli, Chairman of the Southern India Regional Council (SIRC) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
He was speaking here on Friday at the inaugural session of the two-day sub-regional conference of the SIRC.
Lack of professionalsThe SIRC is planning to have the students and members carry a 66-km long banner at the regional conference in August in Mahabalipuram. It is one of the programmes being taken up to create awareness on the profession. “If steps are not taken to induct new members into the profession soon, existing practitioners will be overburdened with work,” he cautioned. However, there is hope for the profession as students who topped the 10+2 exams in Tamil Nadu said that they did not want to become engineers or doctors but Chartered Accountants.
The two-day sub-regional conference was being organised for the benefit of members of the 10 branches of the ICAI in the State. The eleventh branch is going to be opened in Eluru and it will come up this year, Aruloli said.
Noting that the Rajahmundry and Kakinada branches had come together to organise a seminar, he said that such cooperation augured well for the profession. The two-day sub regional conference would discuss developments in the tax field and experts from across India would be delivering lectures in a number of current topics like analysis of exemptions and recent changes in service tax, income computation and disclosure standards, MAT and real estate transactions and capital gains. TVS Krishna Kumar, Director of Finance of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, was felicitated on the occasion.
