There has been a drop in the number of candidates scoring an overall 100 percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2018.

According to the results declared on CAT website, as many as 11 candidates have scored an overall 100 percentile in 2018, down from 20 who made it to the top 20 last year. Moreover, all 11 candidates are male and from engineering or technology background, as compared with two female candidates and three non-engineers who were among the top 20 in CAT 2017.

As many as 21 candidates scored an overall 99.99 percentiles this year and a majority of them (19) were from engineering and technology background.

CAT 2018 results were declared on CAT website on January 5.

“From the graduation records, seven candidates are from different IITs followed by two candidates from Jadavpur University. From the permanent address provided during application, seven candidates are from Maharashtra, two from West Bengal, and one each from Karnataka and Bihar,” said Sumanta Basu, CAT Convener – 2018.

It is to be noted that IIM Calcutta was the organising institute for CAT 2018.

Interestingly, there was an eight per cent rise in the number of enrolments by female candidates for the exam this year at around 84,350. However, only around 73,326 female candidates actually took the exam, which is nearly six per cent down as compared with close to 78,000 candidates who appeared for the exam in 2017.

CAT was conducted in two shifts on November 25, 2018. A total of 2,09,405 candidates had appeared for the exam, which was conducted in test centres spread across 147 cities. The number of test takers this year was the largest till now. Apart from 73,326 female, 1,36,075 male and four transgender candidates took the exam this year.

Various IIMs will release their shortlist for subsequent process considering CAT score and other criteria. More than 100 other non-IIM institutions also use CAT score for admission to their management programmes.
